R.I.P. Mr. Roarke, The Prisoner and… Apple?

I guess Wednesday is the new Monday, because yesterday kind of sucked! In addition to Apple CEO Steve Jobs taking a medical leave of absence until late June, we’ve got the deaths of Ricardo Montalban and Patrick McGoohan to be depressed about.

OK, so maybe Apple shouldn’t be included in this R.I.P. — Tim Cook is stepping up to take Jobs’ place during his absence, as he did for two months when Jobs had surgery to kick pancreatic cancer awhile back. But it does make one pause and wonder, “What would Apple be like without Steve?” Has their decade-long (mostly) winning streak come to an end? Only time will tell.

But the end has indeed sadly come for two more actors from my long-lost childhood.

Patrick McGoohan is best known to modern audiences from his last major role in BRAVEHEART (one of my least favorite Mel Gibson flicks), but to me he’ll always be THE PRISONER.

Ricardo Montalban is probably best-known for any one of the following: For playing Armando in ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES and CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (two of my favorites in the series), for pimping soft Corinthian leather seats in ’70s TV commercials for Chrysler, as Kirk’s nemesis Khan in the STAR TREK series (and best of the movies, THE WRATH OF KHAN) and most memorable, his role as Mr. Roarke on FANTASY ISLAND.

Growing up and watching these guys fade out to heaven just blows. ‘Nuff said!
