Cinema Wasteland recap

I’ve been MIA for the last few weeks mostly due to an avalanche of freelance work, which includes editing some trailers for another distributor, but last weekend I had the good fortune of hitting Ken & Pam Kish’s excellent Cinema Wasteland convention in Strongsville, Ohio for the second October in a row.

Joining me for the madness was my 15-year-old nephew Zach and actress Ariauna Albright, who flew out from L.A. to hang with us and even sign a few autographs. Cinema Wasteland is by far the finest midwest horror convention of them all, if not the best worldwide! Ken & Pam take care of their guests, vendors and fans like they’re family and I’m always happy to make the trek.

I thought Ariauna’s head would blow clean off her shoulders when she found out we were positioned next to Italian director Lamberto Bava (DEMONS) and actress Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni (MOTHER OF TEARS), as well as former GASP etc. publisher Mike Baronas. Since I had just received a copy of the Italian-dubbed release of WITCHOUSE 2: BLOOD COVEN in the mail from a fan, I made a copy for Ariauna to give Lamberto Bava, who was a cool dude to meet.

This year, I got a little surprise when a fan showed me a tattoo he had put on his arm… none other than the cover artwork for THE DEAD NEXT DOOR! Now that’s dedication to your horror, and it was in good company with accompanying images of Michael Myers, Pinhead and others. (Sorry I didn’t get your name, dude!)

I had another nice surprise when German producer/distributor Steve Aquilina popped over to my table! Steve was the first guy to license THE DEAD NEXT DOOR over 15 years ago when we met at an L.A. FANGORIA Weekend of Horrors show, and he’s also the producer of the three VIOLENT SHIT movies, which he just licensed to Synapse Films for a forthcoming DVD release.

The show was pretty low-key and it went by fast, especially since I had to cut out early on Sunday to attend my niece Danielle’s birthday party in the afternoon. But it was great fun to meet a lot of fans, shake hands, sign autographs and even have some pictures taken with them. I’m looking forward to doing it again next year, and I never say that about conventions!

(Oh, and there are a few more pix from the show on my Facebook photo gallery which you can get to by clicking the Photo link at the top of any page!)
