Let’s get this party started!

Welcome to the blog! I’ve been meaning to do this for a good long time, and actually went to the trouble of installing WordPress on my domain back in 2004-2005. I then proceeded to get lazy and stuck with the blogs at MySpace, even though I was never particularly happy with the limitations on the Mac (very little fancy text editing and a real pain in the butt to add media).

So when WordPress announced that they were doing an iPhone-native version of their blogging software, I knew it was just a matter of time before I got motivated to really start doing some blogging here. And that day is today!
I’m also motivated by my newfound second career as a journalist. Last summer, I had breakfast with my old pal Dave Williams while on vacation in L.A. with the wife. Dave was one of the first guys to review my first feature film THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, in the pages of the long-lost Film Threat Video Guide. (And it was a heckuva nice review, I might add… something about the movie exceeding the scope of Romero’s zombie flicks or some such.) Anyway, Film Threat Video would go on to sell copies of the movie through their mail-order biz and Dave & I remained infrequent buds over the years as he moved up & down the publishing food chain, including stints with American Cinematographer and the revamped Cinefantastique/Femme Fatales.

Before dragging the wife across this great nation of ours, I had thrown out e-mails to everyone in L.A. in the hopes of catching up with as many of them as possible, and Dave W. consented to meet us at Burbank’s finest greasy breakfast nook, Eat ‘n Park (which had been a fave during my 9 years in L.A.). It was purely a catching up and meeting the new wife kind of thing, but before I knew it, Dave was hitting me up with the prospect of writing for his latest gig as managing editor of DV (Digital Video) magazine. A couple months later, I was cutting my teeth on Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum Edition editing software. I guess they must have dug it, because the offers keep coming!

So, in addition to producer/director/editor on a dubious lineup of cult movies over the last 23+ years, I’m now a freelance tech journalist (in theory). Of course, to those who were following my moves in the early ’90s, that should come as no surprise since I published & edited the late, great Alternative Cinema magazine, which was spawned from a meager mail-order newsletter called The B’s Nest. And those were fun days, but not as fun as getting tech gadgets in the mail, playing with them for awhile and then writing up my thoughts on the matter. (And getting paid is nice, too. LOL!)

This blog is mostly a way to keep flexing my writing muscles as time goes on. It’ll be a hodgepodge of subjects, ranging from stuff that might be happening with any of my old flicks to whatever I’m writing about in the pages of DV and current obsessions like the iPhone. And yeah, I’ll be blogging from the iPhone, too. (Thanks, WordPress!)

I’ve shuttled my old MySpace blog entries over here for your amusement, so have a read and feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section below! Thanks for popping in!

(And yeah, that’s a pic of me circa 1985 in the very early stages of THE DEAD NEXT DOOR…)
