Despite the last couple weeks of having apps randomly go bad on me, requiring deleting everything and then reinstalling all of them to get things working again, my love affair with Apple’s iPhone App Store is still in full bloom. And I’m happy to say I’m back with some more recommendations!

I’m a little late on this one and it’s a diversion from my other posts, but did anyone see the news story about the butthead in Jacksonville, Florida who called 911 not once but twice to complain about Subway? (I’m speaking, of course, about the sandwich-making Subway and not the underground one.)

Apple’s fantastic iPhone App Store has been out for just over a month now, and yet it’s taken me that long just to blog about it here. I guess that means I’ve been busy downloading stuff and playing with it more than writing about it!

As the swell of applications increases, it becomes harder and harder to find the gems amongst the stuff that’s crap (especially with the amount of tip calculators, Sudoku games and things that make you go, “What were they thinking?“). And there’s a ton of free stuff that isn’t worth the time to download and try ’em out. So, without further ado, here are the 5 free apps that I’m using most frequently, and recommend to everyone:

The esteemed Wayne Alan Harold (of TOWNIES fame) sent me a link to this debate over on The A.V. Club website:

Crosstalk: Is The Golden Age Of DVD Over?

For those who are too lazy to read it, basically it says that the best years of DVD are behind us, despite the fact that not everything has made it to the format yet. Sadly, the piece is mostly dead-on.

I came away from THE DARK KNIGHT last week with mixed emotions. It made so much money and so many people were raving it… why was I left with mixed emotions, exactly? I had praised BATMAN BEGINS as the best Batman film ever when it came out and for months have been eagerly awaiting the new chapter. I was ready to be amazed all over again!

Saw this mallrat in various places while shopping at Beachwood Place with the wife today. As we were leaving he had staked out a place on the first floor where he sat cooling off with his battery-powered hand fan. Had to cleverly find away to snap a pic of him with the iPhone using the wife as a decoy behind him! 😉

Check out the homemade slogan on his shirt… priceless!

I’ve been a freelance kind of guy by trade since quitting the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in July, 1985 at the beginning of my second year. The stroke of luck that landed me with the deal for my first film, THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, has continued more or less for 23 years to varying degrees. Never rich but not quite poor, I’ve essentially accomplished what I set out to do more than two decades ago, which is to get by doing what I love. I never wanted to be famous and I never wanted to be rich. Ask and ye shall receive! 😉
