Look, I love my iPhone. I was one of the original nutballs who sat outside my local AT&T store on June 29, 2007 for 5 hours to make sure I got one, and then repeated that the following July with a 6-hour wait outside an Apple Store for the iPhone 3G. And I’m a faithful kind of guy, both in life and in gadgets.

But sometimes, something comes along that makes you lust for it just a little too much. And thankfully, when it comes to gadgets, it’s perfectly legal to have two wives. But does it make any sense?

Home theatrics: Revenge of XBMC and Apple TV

If you follow this blog at all, you’ve probably read some of my exploits in trying to find a perfect home theatre solution that blends discless DVD playback with the latest streaming video trends. Last year I jacked a D-Link DNS-323 NAS into my home office network with 2 TB of storage for ripped DVDs, and have been alternating between the Apple TV and an HP Windows Vista box to watch them.

Unfortunately, this isn’t quite as seamless as I had first hoped.

Blockbuster about to hit the skids?

According to a bit posted today on Electronista.com, Blockbuster may be wailing its final death throes at long last. Apparently, Big Blue has told the Securities and Exchange Commission that it “doesn’t believe it can continue business” and that it doesn’t believe it can remain a “going concern”.

I doubt anyone will be surprised by this… personally, I’ve had it out for Blockbuster for nearly two decades after watching their uncompetitive practices, particularly with their bullying abuse of independent studios. So, crash & burn, guys… Hell has a special place set aside for you.

P.S.: I should clarify that my hostility is aimed at Blockbuster Corporate and not at the former Movielink staff (disclaimer: Tempe deals with them), or the occasional cool franchise store who’s given indie flicks a chance to shine on their shelves.

Google Voice: If you were a chick, I’d kiss you with an open mouth

I’ve been a subscriber of the free, little-known GrandCentral service for several years, and have gotten a lot of use out of it. GrandCentral’s aim was to give you “one telephone number for life” — a motto that wound up being rather ironic when they notified me some months back that the number I was using would no longer be available and they assigned me a new one. I’ve still got company checks with that old number printed on them, how annoying. (They swear it will never happen again.)

That hiccup aside, about a year and a half ago, they were bought out by Google. And time passed with no news. Like many frequent users, I began to worry that Google had wasted their investment and would toss it to the curb at some point. That is, until a couple weeks ago, when they unveiled their overhaul of the service, now dubbed Google Voice.

So what makes it so cool?

Hey Netflix… have you heard we’re in a recession?

I don’t often publicly vent about customers who help put food on my table, but this afternoon I got the above e-mail, and I’m pretty steamed about it. Here’s why.

Rehab: GROOM LAKE, A Film by William Shatner…

GL scout with Shatner.jpg

My copy of the new GROOM LAKE DVD from Koch showed up this afternoon, so I gave it a quick spin. On the plus side, the transfer is (finally) 16:9 anamorphic the way we shot it, where the previous disc that Full Moon/Shadow Entertainment briefly released was only 4:3 letterboxed.

But that’s about the only positive thing I can say.

Bad economy? Not at my mall…

Mallrats.jpg

The wife and I hit the mall today for lunch at Chick-Fil-A and a side trip to Macy’s so she could pick up some face cream before we did some baby thrift store shopping for Benji accessories.

So if the economy is so bad, why was the mall packed with so many shoppers??

Please welcome… Benjamin Robert Bookwalter!

As I mentioned in a few other posts, the wife and I have been expecting a baby and last Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 3:33 am, he arrived! Benjamin Robert Bookwalter popped out a healthy 7 lbs. 8 ozs., 21″ tall after 18 hours of labor. Of course, he decided it was time to come on one of the worst days of an Ohio winter! But he was delivered without incident and both baby and mommy are doing well.

It goes without saying that his birth is one of the proudest moments of my life… it’s truly amazing to stand there and watch his birth and immediately see how it dwarfs all of my other accomplishments in life.

Thanks to my family & friends who have shared in the experience… I’ll try not to be one of those annoying parents who goes on and on about his kid in my blog… after 42 years being baby-free, I know how grating that can be!

Confessions of an upgrade junkie

I’ll admit it: I’m a whore for software updates. I’m always the first person I know to buy new OS upgrades. Adobe keeps getting my hard-earned $$ for every Creative Suite upgrade (at least since CS2, anyway). I spend my evenings with iPhone in hand, clicking on the App Store every so often to see what’s been updated that night. I visit Versiontracker.com almost first thing every morning, and several times throughout the day, to see what’s new. And I get a little tingle whenever I open some piece of freeware or shareware that pops up a notice about a new update, even if the list of changes have nothing to do with me.

But a funny thing has happened recently… I’m starting to skip some of the paid updates.

Good riddance, 2008!

2008 ball drop.jpg

I can’t recall wanting a year to end as much as I did 2008! I mean, did that year just suck ass or what?!

I should have known what the year would hold for me… I spent New Year’s Day evening emptying the contents of my stomach outside of an Applebee’s in Niagara Falls, Canada. (Can’t blame the food here… I had a bug on the drive up there and I could barely eat soup. It was some kind of stomach flu, and it wouldn’t be my first bout of it in 2008). I take things like that as a bad omen.
