While I was off vacationing in Ukraine the last couple of weeks, Apple pushed a huge update to the iPhone with version 2.1 of the software. I never got a chance to bitch-blog about the headaches I was having with insanely long backup times and having to delete & reinstall applications for the last few weeks because of major bugs in the 2.x system, but thankfully they’re all a memory.

Long story short, if you have an iPhone, you owe it to yourself to download iTunes 8 and iPhone 2.1. Applications install (and delete) way faster, backups are finally as zippy as they always should have been, music playlists now feature the artist name under the song titles and yes, no more of this nonsense with applications ceasing to work for no reason. Oh, and you’re supposed to get longer battery life and better 3G reception, which seems to be the case on my end. Kudos to Jobs & Co. on this one!

Five more excellent free iPhone applications

Despite the last couple weeks of having apps randomly go bad on me, requiring deleting everything and then reinstalling all of them to get things working again, my love affair with Apple’s iPhone App Store is still in full bloom. And I’m happy to say I’m back with some more recommendations!

Apple’s fantastic iPhone App Store has been out for just over a month now, and yet it’s taken me that long just to blog about it here. I guess that means I’ve been busy downloading stuff and playing with it more than writing about it!

As the swell of applications increases, it becomes harder and harder to find the gems amongst the stuff that’s crap (especially with the amount of tip calculators, Sudoku games and things that make you go, “What were they thinking?“). And there’s a ton of free stuff that isn’t worth the time to download and try ’em out. So, without further ado, here are the 5 free apps that I’m using most frequently, and recommend to everyone:

MacBook Pro hard drive upgrade & Batman, all in the same day!

Finally got tired of having a mere 10 GB of free space on my main system, which is an Apple MacBook Pro with a 120 GB hard drive. I actually had to shuttle my 12 GB iPhoto library off to an external drive in order to install Windows XP via Boot Camp (jump back two posts for the details). So last Saturday, I hit my favorite online vendor for such upgrades, Other World Computing, and procured a 320 GB replacement drive for less than $200 and it arrived this gloomy, rainy morning.

Epson sent me their $3,500 SRP Discproducer a couple weeks ago, which I’m reviewing for DV magazine. After cracking open the enormous shipping crate and skimming the setup guide, I learned that the accompanying software is Windows only — not a big surprise, right?

So I got busy with other stuff after its arrival and procrastinated a bit in setting it up, since my deadline isn’t until August 8 and I have the loaner for a month. Lesson learned!

I’ve got a case of iFever…

So Apple finally set a date for their damned iPhone, which I’ve already been salivating about since it was announced in early January. Sadly, June 29 is still 3+ weeks away at this writing, and of course given the amount of interest in this device, there’s not even a guarantee that I’ll actually get one of the little bastards unless I want to go camp out in front of the nearest Apple or AT&T store all night (and frankly, I’m a little old for that now).

Why I won’t be connecting an Apple TV to my home theatre anytime soon…

If you’re a Mac geek like me, then you’ve no doubt heard that Apple has started to ship their famed Apple TV box, which lets you enjoy iTunes movies, TV shows and music videos on your HDTV. I’ve read some online articles that make it sound like this box is going to revitalize the sagging “download-to-own” market and that it will be The Next Cool Thing To Own, like the iPod did for music.

Sadly, it won’t… and here’s why.
